Destroying mosques, religious sites is playing into enemy’s hands: Iranian priest

The priest of the East Orumiyeh Assyrian Church says people protesting economic problems should be wary that demonstrations are different from riots, and the destruction of mosques and other religious sites will be playing into enemy’s hands.

AhlulBayt News Agency: The priest of the East Orumiyeh Assyrian Church says people protesting economic problems should be wary that demonstrations are different from riots, and the destruction of mosques and other religious sites will be playing into enemy’s hands.

Destroying public property, mosques and religious sites, and setting banks and stores on fire, under the name of protests, are in contrast with true demonstrations and serve adversaries’ goals, Dayavush Azizian told IRNA on Sunday.

He emphasized that the protesters should make their voices heard through peaceful means, warning that they will be playing into enemies’ hands if they do any action that disturbs security and tranquility.

The existing issues can be resolved easily and the government is making its utmost effort to resolve them, therefore the protesters should be wary of the way that they are expressing their demands in order to prevent any harm to public interests and the country’s security, Azizian said.

Peaceful protests began in the capital, Tehran, less than two weeks ago over economic problems triggered by increase in exchange rates of foreign currencies. The Iranian government announced that it would talk with the protesters’ representatives to hear their demands. But the demonstrations turned into riots in the past few days after certain terror groups penetrated into the protests and set fire to banks, stores, religious sites, ambulances, and firefighting vehicles, among others.

Iranian officials say the perpetrators of the latest unrest are backed by the United States and Israel.
